In 2014, I posted information on my Troutman family lineage here. If you want to refresh your memory, click on the link.
Today, I'm charting the family of my paternal great-grandfather, Daniel Absolum Troutman, who was listed on the earlier chart as a son of Henry2 Troutman and Margaret E. (Leonard) Troutman. My purpose for this blog is not to try to reconstruct the entire Troutman clan tree and all its branches, but to tell the stories of my direct ancestors and a little on their siblings to round out the families. At the above link I did not add all my sources for two reasons: (1) I had already added all the sources to their stories, and (2) it is SO time-consuming. This time, I decided to slog through the addition of the sources, so if you want to know—here they are. The most interesting footnotes, at least to me, are numbers 14, 22, and 26 because they hold some of my unsolved mysteries.
My great-grandfather, Daniel Absolum, was the
seventh child of Henry and Margaret and the third generation born in America.

1930 and 1935.24 Second married Leslie Fogleman (11 Dec. 1887, Phillips Co.,

Co., NE28)
on 27 October 1909, Audrain Co., MO.29
There, you have it. For next week, I plan to write more about
my grandparents, Clint and Mary (Waggoner) Troutman, their lives together (finally!).
P. S. I have never been able to figure out why some footnotes appear to be a font size different from the others. When I copy and paste from my Word file, they are all the same. If anyone knows the answer, let me know, please.

6 Death place and date are estimated from Tell Worley’s last known residence on

son he was living with in 1930 moved to Oregon by 1935.

her presence with Marshall Hendrick in the 1925 census of Crawford County Iowa.
9 For birth: Smyth County, Virginia, Register of Births, Book 1: 62, entry for Male
(no name) Troutman, Dec. 1871; County Clerk’s Office, Marion. This date
conflicts with the date on the tombstone, which was added many years after his
death. For birth and death dates: Rich Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery
(Smyth Co., Va.); John W. Troutman, marker; photo. Aug. 2004 by the researcher.

accessed 20 January 2016); entry for Virginia Totten, 12 March 1878. This birth
date conflicts with the one on the death certificate and the tombstone, 24 Feb.
1878. For birth and death: Virginia Death Records, 1912-2014, Virginia Totten

Troutman, 28 September 1879. Also confirming the above death date: Virginia

accessed 20 January 2016). Also, U. S. Federal Census and Mortality Schedules,
1850-1885, Clifton P. Troutman, Sep. 1879, database Ancestry.com (http://ancestry.com

the tombstone contradict birth and death dates in court house records: Find A Grave, mem. page for Clifton P.
Troutman (1875-1880), mem. no. # 72043817, Rich Valley
Presbyterian Ch. Cem., Rich Valley, Va.; photos contrib. by James Archer.
14 For birth: Smyth Co., Va., Reg. of Births, Book 1: 133, entry for S. B. J.
Troutman, 10 January 1877. Also, another entry is puzzling: Smyth Co., Va.,
Reg. of Births, Book 1: 112, entry for Bessie Troutman, 9 April 1876 (nine
months earlier). This clearly looks as if there were two girls. For death: Smyth
Co., Va., Reg. of Deaths, Book 1, 1857-1896: no page; Sarah B. Troutman, 12
March 1880 (reported by her father). Also, U. S. Fed. Census and Mort. Sched.,
1850-1885, Bessie Troutman, April 1880. Again, this appears to be two deaths. Also,
Virginia Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917, Sarah B. Troutman, 6 April 1880.
(Same month as Bessie) These conflicting records raise the question whether S[arah]. B. J. and Bessie
were the same person. If they were two children, the mortality schedule should
include both names, but it includes only one. When their brother, James Henry
Troutman erected a tombstone for his three siblings’ infant deaths (Clifton P.,
Bessie J., and Mary E.), he included only the name Bessie J. If there were two
girls, why didn’t he include Sarah B.? Also, their mother, America Troutman,
reported in the 1910 census having had ten children with seven living. If
Bessie and Sarah B. were two children, she should have reported having had
eleven children. It’s an unsolved mystery, but for now, I have merged the two
names. Also, the tombstone birth date for Bessie J. conflicts with all the
other records: Find A Grave, mem.
page for Bessie J. Troutman (1874-1880), mem. no. # 72043816, Rich
Valley Presbyterian Ch. Cem., Rich Valley, Va.; photos contrib. by James
Archer.
15 For birth: Smyth Co., Va., Reg. of Births, Book 1: 141, entry for Mary Ellen
Troutman, 12 November 1878. For death: Smyth Co., Va., Reg. of Deaths, Book 1,
1857-1896: no page; Mary E. Troutman, 15 Sep. 1879 (reported by her father D.
A. Troutman). Also, Virginia Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917, Mary E.
Troutman, 15 Sep. 1879. Also, U. S. Fed. Census and Mort. Sched., 1850-1885,
Mary E. Troutman, Aug. 1879. (Minimal conflict with these dates.) The tombstone
dates, however, conflict with birth and death dates. Find A Grave, mem. page for Mary E. Troutman (1878-1880), mem. no.
# 72043816, Rich Valley Presbyterian Ch. Cem., Rich

22 Daisy’s birth dates vary from source to source. California, Death Index,

County, Virginia, Register of Births, Book 1: 12, entry for Female (no name)
Troutman; County Clerk’s Office, Marion. Birth date in this source is 27 June
1886. This is the only female birth to Daniel A. and America Troutman that
could possibly be Daisy. In census records, her year of birth varies from 1884
(1900 U. S. census, Smyth Co., VA) to 1887 (1940 U. S. census, Merced, CA).

This date estimate is based on Daisy’s location

of Fresno, California, which states that she and Les Fogelman were living in
the same place in 1935.

26 Sources also differ on the year Clint was born. Smyth County, Virginia,
Register of Births, Book 1: 19, entry for Clinton Troutman; County Clerk’s Office,
Marion. Date is recorded as 16 Dec. 1887. On his WWI draft registrations, Clint
reported his birth year as 1886: “U. S. World War I Draft Registration
