Found Treasure: Mary Edna Worley's Tombstone Photo

Try as I might to get all the evidence I can for my blog, sometimes I uncover new treasures that change earlier writings. Happily, it’s usually for the best.

Yesterday, I was thrilled to find a photo of the grave marker for Daisy’s and Will’s first daughter, Mary Edna, who was born and died in Nebraska in 1915. My early evidence suggested that she was buried at Winside, but I found that she was buried at Wayne and her grave is marked with a sweetly carved stone that includes birth and death dates. She was not quite 10 months old. What a sad day for her family when their darling daughter died. With permission from the photographer, Brad Kellogg, I’ve added a photo of the tombstone to the earlier blog, which you can see at this link.

Of course, I had to share it here, too. It’s beautiful.

 Searching for sources in Nebraska, I first found the photo of Mary Edna’s gravestone on a web site that’s new to me: nebraskagravestones.org. Started in 2003, it’s part of The Gravestone Photo Project (GPP) that includes most states. Brad Kellogg manages the South Dakota project and also contributes to the Nebraska project. Brad added the photo to Find A Grave, as well.1

D. A. & A. A Troutman: Charting Their Children

In 2014, I posted information on my Troutman family lineage here. If you want to refresh your memory, click on the link.

Today, I'm charting the family of my paternal great-grandfather, Daniel Absolum Troutman, who was listed on the earlier chart as a son of Henry² Troutman and Margaret E. (Leonard) Troutman. My purpose for this blog is not to try to reconstruct the entire Troutman clan tree and all its branches, but to tell the stories of my direct ancestors and a little on their siblings to round out the families. At the above link I did not add all my sources for two reasons: (1) I had already added all the sources to their stories, and (2) it is SO time-consuming. This time, I decided to slog through the addition of the sources, so if you want to know—here they are. The most interesting footnotes, at least to me, are numbers 14, 22, and 26 because they hold some of my unsolved mysteries.

My great-grandfather, Daniel Absolum, was the seventh child of Henry and Margaret and the third generation born in America.

If there were two girls, why didn’t he include Sarah B.? Also, their mother, America Troutman, reported in the 1910 census having had ten children with seven living. If Bessie and Sarah B. were two children, she should have reported having had eleven children. It’s an unsolved mystery, but for now, I have merged the two names. Parallel Lives of Stelle and Daisy, Part 4: Daisy's Divorce

About 10 years after my paternal grandfather’s sister, Estelle and her husband Tell Worley divorced, Daisy and Will Worley divorced as well.

During the late '20s, Will went to California for six weeks to look for business opportunities. While he was gone, Daisy and the children stayed with Clint and Mary. Will bought a fruit ranch and sent back a box of raisins and dried peaches.[1] By 1930, Daisy and Will had moved to Merced County, California, in the heart of the green and fertile Central Valley. They have an additional child, Harold, age two, who was born in California when Daisy was 42, so they have been there at least two years. He worked a vineyard and his three sons, Marvin, age 21, LeRoy, age 19, and Charles, age 17, helped him work the farm. Thelma, age 13, and William, age 10 are at home and attend school. Daisy’s occupation is “none,”[1] but we all know what that means. She has no income, but she cleans house, cooks, sews, mends, gardens, and in general, keeps the household running smoothly. But that will change.

By 1940, Daisy and Will are no longer together. Marital status “divorced,” Will, age 56, lives on Cressy Way, Merced, California, with his sons William, Jr., 20, and Eugene, 12, and daughter Thelma Hughes, 24, divorced, and her daughter Didere, age 4. Will, Jr. seems to be the only one employed.[2]

As for Daisy Virginia, age 53 (fudged on her age a bit), she is living on Tuolome Street, Fresno, California, and married to Leslie Fogelman, age 52. They have been living in that place at least since 1935. Leslie is employed as “lumber president” at a lumber company.[3]

Who was Leslie Fogelman?

Born in Phillips County, Kansas in 1887 to Robert and Hattie (Heath) Fogelman, Leslie grew up a farmer’s son, the oldest of four children.[4] When he registered for the WWI draft, he worked as a clerk in the Farmer’s Union Mercantile Company, in Phillipsburg, Kansas. Described as short, medium weight, with grey eyes and light brown hair, he had lost a fore-finger on his left hand. He had a wife and two children.[5] By 1920, still in Phillipsburg, he had been married to Effie B. for about about ten years; they had two daughters, Guenthe, age 8, and Pauline, age 3. Leslie was working on his “own account” as a “grocery man” in a retail store,[6] which could be the same job as the clerk in the mercantile company. Ten years later, Leslie is in California, age 41, “widowed,” living in a rooming house and working as a proprietor of a grocery.[7] Did Leslie fudge on his marital status, too? Was he actually divorced? What happened to Effie and his daughters has, as yet, not been discovered. And by 1935, he and Daisy Virginia Troutman Worley were married.

Wish I knew how they met.

Les Fogelman died 17 January 1959, at the age of 71 and was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Fresno, California.[8] Daisy Virginia Troutman Worley Fogelman lived longer than any of her siblings and their spouses. She died at the age of 92 on 28 July 1977 and was buried beside Les in the same cemetery. [9]

As for Will Worley, the father of Daisy’s children, he and his son Lee eventually returned to their roots in Smyth County, Virginia. My husband and I had the privilege of meeting Will about 1972 when we purchased property from him in Rich Valley. He died at age 89 on 03 September 1973 and was buried in the hillside cemetery at Rich Valley Presbyterian Church near his former in-laws, Daniel A. and America Troutman.[10] Will and Daisy's son, Lee owned a country store grocery and gas station in Rich Valley. He married a Rich Valley girl, Louise Patrick,[11] and raised his family there.

Parallel Lives of Stelle and Daisy, Part 3: Stelle's Divorce

My paternal grandfather, Clint Troutman’s two sisters Laura Estelle and Daisy Virginia shared several parallel experiences in their lives, the last of which is that they both divorced their husbands who shared the same name: William Tell Worley.

 Stelle and Tell Worley divorced first. Although divorce records have not been located, the split likely took place between 1920 and 1925. Their daughter Leona married a Nebraska native, Charles Brewer, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on 18 Feb 1924.[1] Whether Stelle and Tell were still married at that time is unknown.

 However, in 1925, Stelle was married to Marshall Hendrick. They were employed as “servants” in the home of a Shirtcliff family in Crawford County, Iowa. [2]  No marriage records have been found for them.

Who was Marshall Hendrick?

The fifth child of seven, Marshall was born in Michigan in 1874 to Lucious B. and Frances M. (Bennett) Hendrick. By 1880, the Hendrick family had moved to Antelope County, Nebraska where Lucious was farming.[3] In 1900, Marshall, age 28 (those pesky census records don’t always agree on age), worked as a brick mason in Antelope County and had a wife Gertie, age 20, and two children, Edith, age 3, and Clyde, age 4 months.[4] In 1910, Marshall and Gertie were still together and with a third child named Ralph.[5] During World War I, Marshall served as a sergeant in the U. S. Army; the war separated him from his family for about 16 months.[6] To date, Marshall and Gertie have not been found in the 1920 census, so whether Gertie died or whether they divorced remains to be discovered.

By 1925, Marshall was married to Laura Estelle Troutman Worley, as noted above. How did Marshall get from Phillipsburg, Kansas to Nebraska or Iowa where he apparently met Estelle Worley? Was Estelle divorced before they met? Only God knows at this point.

Back in Madison County, Nebraska in 1930, Stelle’s ex-husband, Tell, age 75, lived with his son Dale, age 30, and Dale’s family at Emerick, a small unincorporated town. The record says he’s “widowed,”[7] but sometimes the folks in those days didn’t like to admit to being divorced. Stelle was alive and well and living in Omaha where she and Marshall Hendrick can be found in 1929,[8] 1937,[9] and 1940.[10] I have not been able to find her and Marshall in the 1930 census.

Apparently, Tell died sometime between 1930 and 1935, for he is not in the census after the former year, and by the latter year, Dale’s family has moved to the state of Oregon where Dale is farming on his own account.[11] Neither is Tell listed in the 1940 census with his other children.[12]

Estelle died at age 71 on 24 February 1941. She was reportedly buried in Graceland Park Cemetery in South Omaha,[13] but attempts to get a photo of her tombstone have not been successful. The cemetery doesn’t seem to have a record of her burial.[14]

After Stelle died, Marshall lived another 20 years. At some point in time, he moved to California where his daughter Edith lived.[15] He died there on 25 January 1961 at age 86 and was buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.[16]

So ends the story of Estella's life and times.
